No Touching at School-- An Update

As you may remember (or read this post to catch up) I was concerned about some inappropriate behavior that was going on at Bug's school. I took the advice that most people gave and decided to ask the teacher about it.

It wasn't Bug's actual teacher, but one of the teacher's from the after school program. So when I picked up Bug the other day, I pulled the teacher aside first and asked her about it.

"So, Bug told me that she was playing mommy and daddy with another boy and he grabbed her privates."

"Really?" the teacher was clearly shocked.

"She told me that she told you about it."

"No, I've haven't seen Bug today, I've been here in the second grade class.  Maybe she told another teacher?"

"No, this didn't just happen," I explained. "She told me over the weekend... so maybe last week?"

The teacher shook her head. "I'm sure I would have remembered if that happened," the teacher said. "We take that very seriously, and I would have told you right away. She must have told another teacher."

I thanked her for her time and got Bug. "Bug," I said. "Miss Amy doesn't remember you telling her about the boy who touched you... when did this happen?"

"Well, it was awhile ago," Bug answered. "I was maybe still in kindergarten."

Seriously? Last year?

"Still.... I think Miss Amy would have remembered something like that. Are you sure you told her, and not maybe another teacher?"

"No, I told her," Bug answered. She was clearly not interested in this conversation. "Maybe she didn't hear me."

What??? "But I thought you told me that the boy got in trouble."

Bug shrugged. "I don't remember exactly what happened. I'm not very fond of Jason."

Well, at least that's a relief. And I love her use of the word fond!

"Well, just remember, if anything like that ever happens again, you tell the teacher, and you tell me. The same day. Mommy will be able to take care of it."

"Ok. Should I tell Daddy, too?"

Well... maybe she should wait to tell The Agent. We wouldn't want him to have a heart attack.

Kids have the wonderful ability to exaggerate the miniscule and downplay the important. It happened all the time when I was teaching. I had a girl go into all this drama about her parents getting divorced and the problems going on at home. None of it was true...she was just a really great actress. Kids.
